There are many truths about God that can be known. These truths are revealed truths. That is, they are revealed to us by God. After all, only God can tell us what He is like. And He tells us what He is like in two ways: special revelation and general revelation. He communicates through His word (the Bible) and through His world (the creation).
There are significant insights that can be gleaned about a maker by looking at what he has made. The same is true about God—the Maker of the heavens and the earth.
Writing to the church in Rome, Paul says, “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” (Rom. 1:19–20).
Here are four truths creation reveals about the nature of God.
First, creation reveals God’s glory. The psalmist David proclaims, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork” (Psa. 19:1). Over one hundred billion galaxies—each with hundreds of billions of stars—are proclaiming, in some small measure, the infinite glory of God.
Second, creation reveals God’s power. Think about it. The entire universe was spoken into existence by God. David says, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host.... For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm” (Psa. 33:6, 9). That’s power.
Furthermore, the creation is sustained in its existence by the same power that created it. The author of Hebrews writes, “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power” (Heb. 1:3).
Third, creation reveals God’s majesty. Majesty isn’t a word we use very often. It means supreme greatness or authority. David says, “Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. Full of splendor and majesty is His work, and His righteousness endures forever” (Psa. 111:2–3). He adds, “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” Because God created and sustains the universe, He has supreme authority over it.
Finally, creation reveals God’s wisdom. The prophet Jeremiah says, “It is He who made the earth by His power, who established the world by His wisdom, and by His understanding stretched out the heavens” (Jer. 10:12). The more we study the details of the architecture of the universe, the more we see the wisdom of its Creator. In fact, the evidence of the fine-tuning of the universe gives us a glimpse, like never before, of the divine Architect, who thoughtfully designed this universe.
