How Not to Argue for the Truthfulness of the Bible

Tim points out a common mistake when trying to argue for the Bible’s reliability.

And so we have all these challenges coming from many different directions. How do we respond? Well, I’ll tell you what, we don’t want to respond this way. You see, some people think, you know, how do we know it’s God’s word? Well here’s how they respond: “Because it says so.” And they might go to 2 Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, correction, reproof, training and righteousness,” that kind of thing. And then you ask them, well, how do you know what the Bible says is actually true? And they’ll say, “Well, because it’s the word of God.” How do you know it’s the word of God? “Because it says so. 2 Timothy....” Well, how do you know what it says is true? You see how this just goes in a circle? In philosophy, we call this “begging the question.” It‘s circular reasoning. We don’t want you to reason this way, okay? The Bible has good reasons to trust it.
